i’m still alive. working on new stuff all over the place and in the midst of redoing the site. stay tuned.
Some Close Ups!
Here are some closer shots of my the faux style sheets I did for my gallery show. Apologies in advance for the quality, the gallery was pretty crowded so my friend just snapped a few quick shots I pieced together. I should have some better shots later this week to upload!
As for the pieces themselves, I more or less redesigned the original Snow White imagery, setting the story in 1930’s Hollywood (Snow White was America’s first full-length animated feature film released in 1937) and using the Disney Studio itself as inspiration. The 9 Old Men of Disney—visionary animators Les Clark, Marc Davis, Ollie Johnston, Milt Kahl, Ward Kimball, Eric Larson, John Lounsbery, Wolfgang Reitherman, and Frank Thomas—appear as the “9″ dwarves, while voice actors from the film reprise their original roles, in the form of character designs.
Charcoal, Chalk, and watercolor on board.

Poisoned Apples and Smoking Lamps Interpreting Fairy Tales and Adventure Stories
April 8 - 23, 2011
School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “Poisoned Apples and Smoking Lamps: Interpreting Fairy Tales and Adventure Stories,” an exhibition of work by third-year students in the BFA Illustration and Cartooning Department, inspired by fairy tales or adventure stories.
The exhibition is curated by Department Chair Tom Woodruff
The theme-based exhibition explores the hidden meanings and symbolism that can be found in fairy tales and adventure stories. By revisiting source material that is usually considered benign or reserved only for children, the works bring to light the emotional truths that can be found in these familiar narratives.
The exhibition includes work by:
Hilary Allison, Vanessa Andrade, Jonathan Bartok, Andrew Berke, Ian Bertram, Vimal Bisundial, Teresa Brodner, Jennifer Chan, Hye Jin Chung, Kate Conrad, James Cook, Hiten Damodar, Eric Danner, Maelle Doliveux, Anastasiya Filimonova, Chloe Finore, Ashley Garcia, Claudia Griesbach-Martucci, Gillian Grossman, Leslie Haller, Tara Hayes, Lucretia Hoagland, Heather Hoffman, Miki Ishikawa, Laura Knetzger, Min Young Lee, Ryan Lemere, Kihyun Lim, James Lipnickas, Lopergalo Nicholas, Lily MacHugh, Hanh Nguyen, Heather Nunnelly, Michelle Nunnelly, Grzegorz Opalinski, Kumiko Otomo-Fong, Matthew Panuska, David Perezcassar, Dorota Porczak, Edwin Reyes, Anne Rush, Jonathan Ruzzo, Andrew Ryan, Jesse Samper, Min Kyung C. Shin, Nicholas Storms, Kelly Teaman, Chun-Hsin Ting, Amedeo Turturro, Aldo Van Enck, Mary Valkosky, Ryan Zalis, Xiaohua Zhang
Opening reception of the show was a blast, and the turn out was great! There was some truly incredible work up by a group of really talented and dedicated people. If anyone is around the gallery will be up for a little while, stop by and check out what we’ve been up to, thanks to everyone who came out to support this week!
Poisoned Apples and Smoking Lamps, Part 1
I’ll be involved in a group gallery show sponsored by SVA.
The theme of the show is Poisoned Apples and Smoking Lamps, which is really just a show revolving around the theme of fairy tales.
I decided to focus on the story of Snow White because I feel it’s a particularly moving story. I opted to work from the Disney script, Disney released Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937, the first animated movie of all time, which I felt was noteworthy as it gave birth to an entire lineage of fairy tale inspired films to be produced by animation studios.
I redesigned the Snow White imagery, setting the story in 1930’s Hollywood and using the Disney Studio itself as inspiration (more about that in Part 2!)
I original conceptualized these as actual cel paintings. The process is really interesting albeit time consuming. Here are two of the cel paintings I worked on before I switched gears. They both involve Queen Grimhilde, the first being when she’s told by Mirror Mirror she is NOT the fairest in the land, and the 2nd being her transformation scene. I never got around to finishing either of these but I still think there was some cool stuff going on. I was working a lot with the shape design theories that I stole from the wonderful Mary Blair.
Happy New Year
